Tutoring Program
October 1991
marked the beginning of First Presbyterian Church’s tutoring
program for students from the A.D. Goode School. As a mission
outreach to the neighborhood, this program provides tutoring and
promotes building of self-esteem. The focus is on second
graders, since educators have identified this age as a pivotal
point in a child’s education.
Classes are held
in the Goode school library Monday afternoons from 2:45-3:45
p.m. There are 18 students, 18 tutors, five substitutes, a
liaison teacher at the school, and a director.
Snacks are
provided at the end of each session. There is also a party at
Christmas, with a storyteller, gifts from the tutors for each
child, and refreshments.
Invitations to
the closing ceremony are sent to the school principal, office
staff, reading teachers, parents, and church personnel.
Students and tutors alike delight in the preparation of a skit
to entertain those present. Each child is presented with a
certificate of achievement, two books, and a bookmark.
Refreshments, of course, are part of the celebration.
An added benefit
is that parents and students of Goode School are invited to
attend the free Thanksgiving and Palm Sunday dinners organized
annually by First Presbyterian Church.
The program is
successful and rewarding for both students and tutors.
Volunteers are
needed. Call the church office (717-843-8041) for more
information.
