Ministries
 |
Sacred
music, like prayer, is the voice of faith raised in adoration,
confession, supplication, and thanksgiving.
Through our Music Ministries we glorify God and strive
to encourage commitment to Christ.
Our spiritual and musical gifts uplift and renew our
worship services in time-honored as well as new traditions.
Our Music Ministry also enriches the community through
new programs and a new outreach mission to encourage community
participation. |
Chancel
Choir
This
vocal ensemble sings traditional anthems, spiritual songs, and
hymns at most of the
10:30 a.m.
Sunday worship services. Our ministry goal is to provide
a caring community within FPC that glorifies God through music
in worship leadership and outreach. All who love to sing
God’s praises are welcome to join.
Cantata
Choir
Members of this seasonal ensemble supplement the Chancel
Choir during the Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter seasons
when large works for chorus and orchestra are being prepared
and presented for special services. Our ministry goal is to provide opportunities for
singers who have difficulty with the weekly Sunday commitment
schedule of the Chancel Choir due to family or job-related
issues, but who are able to attend mid-week rehearsals. All who love to make a joyful noise unto the Lord are
welcome to participate. The
Cantata Choir performs at least two major works during the
year.
Praise
Team and Band
This group is open to members who are interested in
participating in the Contemporary Worship service, singing,
playing guitars, keyboards, drums, or auxiliary percussion
instruments.
Joyful
Singers
This
group is involved in a choir program open to all children in
grades K-5. The
Alpha group consists of kindergarten through second graders
and the Omega group is made up of third through fifth graders.
The children are exposed to many music-making
experiences through singing and playing rhythmical
instruments. In
addition to learning concepts about vocal production and the
fundamentals of music, the children also prepare music to
perform during worship services.
Abendmusik
Series
This concert series is the primary vehicle for the
Music Ministry’s community outreach.
With an ambitious schedule of six or more concerts a
year, Abendmusik draws FPC neighbors and the larger community
into the church to participate in or listen to sacred and
secular music, including special holiday music.
York
Oratorio Society
The
York Oratorio Society was founded in 1998 by Robert Frazier,
artistic director and conductor, under the auspices of First
Presbyterian Church’s Abendmusik series.
The Society presents two sacred Oratorios or Choral
Masterworks each season within the sanctuary of FPC with
chamber orchestra and soloists.
The Society’s membership consists of FPC members and
community participants within a balanced soprano, alto, tenor,
bass ensemble of sixty singers.
The Society is an auditioned ensemble that is committed
to the highest standards of excellence with members coming to
all rehearsals prepared; individual vocal parts are reviewed
and learned in advance. This particular requirement is
necessary because of the limited number of rehearsals
scheduled prior to each performance.
Funding for the instrumental support and all other
expenditures for these projects is generated by the Abendmusik
Concert Series.
FPC
Orchestra
The ministry goal of the orchestra is to glorify God through
instrumental music and provide opportunities for anyone in our
church family or the community who wants to “draw their
bows, toot their horns, or crash cymbals” to the Glory of
God. This
intergenerational ensemble accepts players at all levels of
ability and participates in worship every four to six weeks.
No audition is required.
All are welcome and encouraged to join.
Festival
Brass
This is an ensemble of flexible dimensions ranging from
a brass quartet to a brass choir that provides musical
offerings in worship every four to six weeks.
All who play brass instruments are welcome to join.
Jubilate
Ringers
The
Jubilate Ringers is composed of twelve principal players as
well as several
substitute ringers who play advanced music.
Music reading is
