Christian Education

Nursery Ministry

Christian education literally begins in the cradle in First Presbyterian’s newly remodeled nursery.  We strive to offer consistent providers, loving care, and a variety of activities for infants and children.  We employ two experienced students who work along with parents and church volunteers on a rotating basis, helping to care for the children.  The refinished quarters provide a secure, convenient, safe and pleasant place for children while their parents worship.  We provide parents with a beeper if they need it, and all children have a numbered nametag that matches them to their parents.

  Church School

Children ages two through grade five are taught in a traditional classroom setting according to their age and grade level.  Teachers “team teach” from a curriculum that contains a variety of learning activities.  The goal for this age group is to meet their needs and learning styles.  The curriculum attempts to apply the lessons of the Bible to the life experiences of the students in order to guide them on their faith journey.  Each year we present a Christmas pageant, have a month of rotational Sunday School, where the children learn about Lent or Bible times, and finish the year with vacation Bible School in June.

Grades six through eight study both the Old and New Testaments with a focus on current events and faith as applied to life skills.

The Senior High Academy Class covers current events and questions of faith as it strives to involve students in discussing and sharing their ideas and thinking.  Confirmation is offered in ninth grade

Children’s Stewardship Program

Each year the children collect money to support four children at the Carmel Matriculation School in Carmel, India. The money is collected in the children’s pledge envelopes and usually totals about $1,500 !

Adult Education

First Presbyterian Church has numerous Adult Education offerings on Sunday mornings.  The Niles Bible Class uses “The Present Word,” a Presbyterian curriculum designed to study both the Old and New Testaments.  Two other classes are offered as well.  Some are small group experiences while others tackle current events, a book of the Bible, Christian lifestyles, and other topics.  FPC has special Advent and Lenten classes.  Classes are taught by church members and guest speakers from outside the church.

Mothers’ Bible Study

The Mothers’ Bible Study meets Tuesday mornings and provides an opportunity to women to learn the Bible, grow in faith, and to meet other young Christian women in the community.  Childcare is provided.  The group studies a variety of topics relevant to their life experiences. Mothers’ Bible Study provides small group discussion with volunteer facilitators and a time for shared prayer.  The Mothers’ Bible Study does not meet during the summer.

Men’s Bible Study

This group meets most Saturday mornings from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m.  This small group of men studies the Bible and prays together.  More members are welcome!

Roundtable Pulpit with Dr. Morgan

All are invited to be a part of this collaborative preaching process.  Groups meet to work with Dr. Morgan to study the Bible text for the next Sunday’s sermon.

WFPC – Wednesdays at First Presbyterian Church

WFPC is an intergenerational midweek program that runs for 12-13 weeks in the fall and again in the spring.  Choir and the “Circle of Friends” class are provided for children K-2, with the class featuring a Bible story or topic and a variety of activities.  The children in grades 3-5 play the bells (Joyful Ringers) and also sing in the choir.  Each fall the children participate in worship and each spring they have a children’s musical. The evening begins with dinner at 6:00 p.m.  Participants then break off into their respective activities.

Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. -

How exciting to take a child by the hand and lead him/her through a learning and caring experience!
