Adult Education

As adults seeking to grow in our faith, we need a community that will help us wrestle with hard questions and support us on our way. We offer a variety of opportunities for adult Christian education, both on Sunday mornings, and at Bible studies throughout the week. All are welcome, and you can drop in to any of the classes any time. Bring your thoughts, bring your questions, and bring your desire to learn!

Adult Sunday School Electives
January 8 – February 26, 2017 (9:30 AM)

HOMEBUILDERS CLASS – Room 208 (note room change)
Sacred Parenting: How Raising Children Shapes Our Souls
Facilitated by Chris and Elizabeth Beaudoin

Parenting is a school for spiritual formation?and our children are our teachers. The journey of caring for, rearing, training, and loving our children will profoundly alter us forever. Instead of discussing how parents can change their kids, Sacred Parenting turns the tables and demonstrates how God uses our kids to change us. You’ll be encouraged by stories of how other parents handled the challenges and difficulties of being a parent?and how their children transformed their relationship with God. Sacred Parenting affirms the spiritual value of being a parent, showing you the holy potential of the parent-child relationship. Join us as we view and discuss this DVD series by Gary Thomas.

PERSPECTIVES CLASS – Room 209
Simply Christian with N.T. Wright
Facilitated by Dan Sharp and Byron Borger

Come unpack some of the most interesting insights about the timeless truths of Christianity, guided by one of the most preeminent Christian thinkers of our time. We have used N.T. Wright videos before and they have been exceptionally well received, so we are excited to offer this new DVD course. Simply Christian will remind us of the things we desire most in this world (that God’s presence would be real; that injustice and other fearful things would be put right; that we would have good relationships and experience beauty, joy, and meaning), and, with Wright’s good Biblical insight and thoughtful application, we will see how the grand story of the Bible can actually point us to the hope for these very things. Short lectures on God, the Old Testament, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the Church will show how the Biblical story helps us understand and answer these deepest longings. Could it be that the Bible provides the resolution to our deepest concerns? The sessions end with some reminders of faithful Christian practices—worship and prayer, reading Scripture, being active in Church and in service—which point us to living into the new creation God has promised. Wright has said that Simply Christian attempts to offer a 21st century Mere Christianity (by C.S. Lewis), showing how the Bible’s teaching about Christian faith could help resolve our modern anxieties. Every week offers much to ponder and is sure to be helpful for those active in church or those just starting out a faith journey. All are invited; guests are especially welcome.

MOTHERS’ BIBLE STUDY
Tuesdays, 9:15–11:00 AM in Christine Thomas Hall

The ladies of Mothers’ Bible Study (MBS) will reconvene on January 3, 2017, after the Christmas/New Year break. At this time we will begin a new study of Uninvited: When You Feel Less Than, Left Out, and Lonely by Lysa TerKeurst. Any women – whether members or simply friends of the church – are invited to join MBS every week for study, fellowship, and light refreshments. This is an excellent time to get in on the new study from the beginning. Child care is provided upon request. Come join us! If you have any questions, contact Heidi Cavanaugh at 225-6631 or Katie Berkebile at 747-8929.

WFPC WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY
Wednesdays, 6:00–7:15 PM in the Parlor

Part of the Wednesdays at FPC program, the Women’s Bible Study (a.k.a. “Women at the Well”) welcomes all women to join in. Beginning January 4, we are embarking on a new study of Paul’s Letter to the Romans, using John Stott’s Romans: Encountering The Gospel’s Power. If you’ve been considering a dive into scripture, or maybe have already logged many hours of study, this would be a great time to jump in. Homework is not required, and a reading of the text precedes discussion each week. We are a group of learners, listeners, talkers, disciples, leaders, and followers of The Way relishing growth together, guided and inspired by the Spirit. So come on in and discover the power of the gospel to transform as revealed in the pages of Romans. For more information, contact leader Laura Byrne at 244-7561 or byrnesix@yahoo.com.
